Overview

Zakia Belkhiri’s Selfie Protest refers to a series of selfies taken by 22-year-old Belgian Muslim woman Zakia Belkhiri in front of an anti-Muslim demonstration held in Antwerp, Belgium in May 2016. Upon the online publication of a photograph depicting the woman’s selfie moment, the image quickly went viral, with many news outlets praising it as a symbolic act of defiance against Islamophobia, though it soon became a target of online backlash after the woman’s history of anti-semitic remarks in the social media came to light.

Background

On May 14th, 2016, the third annual Muslim Expo, a weekend-long festival celebrating the lifestyle and culture of Muslims, was held in Antwerp, Belgium. During the second day of the event, around 40 members of Belgium’s right-wing political party Vlaams Belang gathered outside the premise of the event for a protest with anti-Islamic picket signs reading messages like “No headscarves,” “No mosques,” and “Stop Islam.” As the demonstration continued, a 22-year-old Muslim woman named Zakia Belkhiri decided to stage a subtle counter-protest by posing for some selfies in front of the picket line, a scene that was captured by photographer Jürgen Augusteyns.

Developments

That same day, Augusteyns’s photograph was published by the Dutch edition of VICE[1], while additional photographs of the woman taken by other attendees and bystanders at the event also began circulating on Twitter.[2][3]

News Media Coverage

In the following days, several dozens of English-language news outlets reported on Belkhiri’s protest selfie, including Vox[8], BuzzFeed[9], Mashable[7], Mic[3], Huffington Post[10], BBC News[6] and Telegraph[5], with many of them describing her action as “fearless,” “inspirational” and “defiant.”

Belkhiri’s Anti-Semitic Remarks

On May 19th, Dutch news site Geenstijl[12] ran an article exposing a history of anti-semitic remarks posted by Belkhiri on her Twitter, Facebook, and Ask.fm accounts, including screenshots of an offensive tweet she had posted in December 2012, which read “Hitler didnt kill all the jews, he left some. So we [would] know why he was killing them,” and her Ask.fm post declaring “Fuck that Jewish language” (shown below). By May 21st, Belkhiri’s anti-Semitic commentaries had been picked up by Breitbart[13], as well as some of the aforementioned news sites.[14][15]

Belkhiri’s Response

On May 20th, as the backlash against Belkhiri continued to escalate in the wake of the revelations, she promptly deleted all of her social media accounts. Two days later, Belkhiri temporarily reinstated her Twitter account to address the accusations of anti-semitism (shown below).

Later on, Belkhiri issued a lengthy apology to “everyone in the Jewish community which I’ve hurt with my comments of several years ago,” adding that “I am not an anti-Semite. Even if it seems so because I haven’t thought of deleting my angry comments from when I was younger and ignorant.”

About

#BernieLostMe is a hashtag used by supporters of the Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton to share their reasons as to why the rival candidate Bernie Sanders is the less suitable nominee for the Democratic National Convention, which began trending after Sanders refused to denounce some of his supporters who behaved violently at the Nevada Democratic Convention in May 2016.

Origin

On May 14th, 2016, Nevada Democratic Party held its convention at the Paris Las Vegas Hotel in Las Vegas as the final stage of the state’s delegate selection process. While Hillary Clinton had already emerged as the winner of the Nevada caucuses in February, many supporters of Bernie Sanders showed up at the convention with high hopes that the final count of the delegates would swing in Sanders’ favor. During the procession, chaos suddenly erupted from the crowds when the party officials declined to accept the credentials of nearly 60 of Sanders’ prospective delegates, which made them ineligible for the final count and thusly Hillary Clinton emerged as the winning candidate.

Many supporters of Sanders in the crowd reacted angrily to their ruling with jeers and violence, ultimately prompting the staff to conclude the event early to ensure the safety of the participants. While the degree of violence at the scene has been disputed by supporters of both candidates, many major news outlets reported that chairs and other objects were thrown around and the state party’s chairwoman Barbara Boxer was harassed with death threats.

Bernie Sander’s Response

On May 17th, Bernie Sanders issued a response to the incident amidst growing pressures from the Democratic Party to denounce his supporters’ acts of violence. However, Sanders defiantly dismissed the complaints of the Nevada party officials as “nonsense” in defense of his supporters.

Spread

On May 18th, the hashtag #BernieLostMe began trending on Twitter as many supporters of Clinton and undecided voters expressed their disappointment at Sanders’ response, particularly from Black Democratic voters. That same day, The New Civil Rights Movement reported on the trending status of #BernieLostMe.

On May 19th, #BernieLostMe was picked up by grassroot supporters of both Democratic candidates, with some Sanders supporters on Reddit and 4chan calling for a hijack of the hashtag, as well as various news outlets and political news blogs, including ABC News, AOL News, Complex, Wired, Mic, Red Alert Politics and Paste Magazine.

Examples

Following the initial period of trending, the hashtag also became a target of parodies and satires among supporters of Bernie Sanders and Republican presidential candidates alike.

Garfield

[Work in progress. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.]

Garfield is an American comic strip created by cartoonist Jim Davis. The strip has been running since 1978, making Garfield the longest-running active comic strip as of June 2016. The comics follow the misadventures of Garfield the cat, his owner, Jon, and Jon’s pet dog, Odie. It currently holds the Guinness World Record for being the world’s most widely syndicated comic, with 2,580 newspapers and journals syndicating it along with 300 million readers each day.

Origin

In the 1970’s, Davis had worked on a strip called Gnorm Gnat, which was met with very little success. One editor claimed his gags and his form of writing were great, but that nobody could identify with bugs. Davis noted to himself that there didn’t seem to be any comic strips revolving around a cat as the main character. Since he had grown up with 25 cats on a farm in Muncie, Indiana, where Garfield takes place, Davis decided to create Garfield. He took the name of the titular character after his grandfather, James A. Garfield Davis. The owner’s name, Jon Arbuckle, came from a 1950’s coffee commercial, and Odie’s name was recycled from a car dealership commercial that Davis had worked on, featuring Odie the Village Idiot. On June 19th, 1978, United Feature Syndicate agreed to have Garfield make it’s debut on 41 newspapers. In his early years, Garfield appeared larger with smaller eyes and walked on all fours, but he would eventually stand up on two legs and have larger features during the 1990s.

Spread

Less than three years after Garfield’s release, the strip accumulated $15 million in merchandise and was being syndicated in over 850 newspapers. Davis founded the company of PAWS, Inc. to manage the merchandise. By 2002, Garfield was the world’s most widely syndicated strip, appearing in 2,570 newspapers with 263 million worldwide readers. By 2004, Garfield had generated $1 billion in revenue along with the strip being syndicated in over 111 countries. Today, rights for the strip remain with PAWS, Inc., although the strip is now currently distributed by Universal Press Syndicate rather than United Feature Syndicate.

Internet

The Term Vegan refers to a lifestyle that asbtains from eating or using anything made by or of animals. Unlike Vegetarians, Vegans cannot consume Dairy. While some Vegans consider this to simply be a life choice, others consider a Moral decision, claiming that it is wrong to kill animals to use them for food.

In a vein of SJWing, a loud, (hopefully) minority of Vegans on social media sites proudly declare themselves as Vegans, and demonize anyone who does not adhere to their ideals, including Vegetarians, as they still, “Subject animals to Slavery”. This has led to many users of these sites creating a simple game called, “spot the Vegan”
